Educating Minds; Educating Hearts
Introduction
Ensuring students attend school dressed smartly in school uniform is the foundation for high standards in other aspects of school life, including a positive work ethic and conduct in and around school.
We thank parents in advance for actively supporting our school uniform expectations. The school will continually monitor the quality of students’ uniform and encourage students to develop a sense of pride in themselves.
A PDF version of this policy is available below.
The School Uniform
Boys
The school uniform consists of a sky blue polo shirt or shirt, royal blue sweatshirt/jumper/fleece, and grey trousers, or shorts in the summer. Shorts must be tailored and knee length. No sports/leisure wear. Footwear is plain black shoes or trainers.
Girls
The school uniform consists of a sky blue polo shirt or blouse, royal blue sweatshirt/cardigan/jumper/fleece, and grey skirt/pinafore/trousers, or shorts in the summer. Blue and white gingham dresses can be worn in summer. Any shorts should be tailored and knee length. No leisure wear, three quarter length or cut offs. Footwear is plain black shoes or trainers.
Nursery
We encourage even our youngest children to wear the school uniform. We appreciate as parents you might need to work towards this for a few weeks but please make every effort to adopt the uniform expectations as soon as possible.
PE Kit
The PE kit is white or black t-shirt, black jumper, black shorts/skort/joggers (not leggings or skin-tight shorts) and black trainers. Children should come to school in PE kit on PE days and will remain in it all day. We find changing whole classes of children to be an ineffective use of learning time.
Footwear
We expect our students to wear a comfortable, practical, safe, plain black shoe or trainer.
Below are a selection of images of shoes and the reasons why they do not meet the criteria set above. Please do not purchase these for use in school.
Wearing Jewellery
The wearing of jewellery can be highly dangerous in the school situation not only to the wearer, but to other pupils too. Therefore, no jewellery whatsoever is to be worn in school, except for a wrist watch and stud earrings. The Governing Body is determined to enforce this rule for the greater safety of all our pupils. Parents are requested to ensure that we have 100% compliance in this matter.
Labelling clothing
With over 280 students at the school it is important that families label the uniform of children. Through human error things will occasionally get misplaced so having a label clearly identifying the name of the student will help minimise the risk of loss.
Coats
We encourage students to wear a coat to school, when required. Please ensure these are practical and can fit inside a locker. Dry-robes (changing-robes) are designed for changing in and out of wetsuits and are not practical in school. Please avoid utilising them as a school coat.
Trousers
Denim, corduroy, chino, tapered, skinny-jean style or skin-tight trousers are not permitted. Students are expected to wear charcoal grey trousers which sit smartly at the waist and on the ankle/shoe line.
Skirts
There is no official skirt. However, any skirt worn to school must be charcoal grey, either A-line or pleated. The length of the skirt should be no shorter than just above the knee. Pencil skirts, as are the fashion at local high schools, are not permitted.
Piercings
Students may wear a plain metal stud only. All other piercings are not acceptable. Please ensure any new piercings take place in holidays to allow for healing time.
Footwear
We expect our students to wear a comfortable, practical, plain black shoe or trainer.
Adjustments
If you believe your child requires a reasonable adjustment to these expectations, then please contact the school office. Please be aware you will be expected to provide supporting evidence.
Makeup and nails
Makeup, nail varnish and false nails are prohibited and should not be worn to school. The school maintains a stock of micellar water and cotton wool pads. Children wearing makeup will be directed to remove it and a phone call home will be made.
Hair
Hair should be natural in colour not dyed.
Headgear
Hats, caps and other headgear should not be worn indoors. They should only be worn to keep the head warm during the winter or to protect from the sun in the summer.
Religious head coverings
A number of world faiths wear head coverings as a symbol of their identity. Head coverings should be dark coloured in keeping with the school uniform colours.
Mobile Devices
Any device brought to school must be switched off and handed in to the class teacher at the start of the day. In all cases, the device remains the responsibility of the student and the school cannot be held liable for any loss, breakage or theft.
Wearable Technology
Wearable technology such as smart watches/glasses are not permitted in school at any time.
Water Bottles
Water bottles need to be a maximum of 500ml and practical for school. We strongly suggest sports style bottles with a twist top.
Please not that the Stanley style bottles are not permitted. They are too large and bulky in the classroom and create storage issues. They have also become a fashion statement with many parents feeling pressured to purchase very expensive bottles for use in school.
Water bottles may contain water only.
